Weather-Proof Wellness: Indoor Yoga for Sensitive Groups

By: Jennifer Much

While summer offers us beautiful sunsets and an escape from freezing temps, it brings an intense heat instead. For some of us, it can be unbearable, especially when seasonal allergies are added to the mix. If this sounds like you, step into our studio; yoga can be a great way to get a solid workout, but staying inside also has its advantages! For yogis with sensitivities, like asthma, diabetes, or flarable skin conditions - or those who are pregnant, indoor yoga provides an exceptionally comfortable and safe way to enjoy a good stretch over summer.

Our studio is conveniently located in downtown Algoma and is a blissful space and temperature-controlled environment that will allow you to focus on your mental and physical well-being in a comfortable way. It creates a truly holistic approach to staying active in the summer months without the sweltering humidity, risk of sunburn, and it won’t have you reaching for a tissue when allergies go haywire!

So, how do indoor yoga sessions benefit those in sensitive groups? Let’s count the ways! You can:

1. Beat Unpredictable Weather
Rain won’t rain on your parade at Roots Yoga and Healing! Our classes run regardless of the rain drops and in-studio sessions help yogis escape the harsh humidity of summer. It can also be safer, too. Higher temperatures and their subsequent humidity can quickly lead to dehydration, fatigue, and the risk of heat exhaustion. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, last year, Wisconsin experienced a 25% increase in emergency department visits for heat-related illnesses. Here, you’ll be in a cool, climate-controlled studio, which creates an ideal environment for two key elements of yoga: deep breathing and steady movements.

2. Forget Pollen and Outdoor Allergies
By practicing yoga indoors, you eliminate exposure to many common summer irritants like pollen, dust, and mold, which can trigger allergies and asthma symptoms. Our studio is well-ventilated, which also offers an additional level of assurance to combat effects. Indoor spaces also have fewer environmental interruptions, including weather extremes, and of course, no bugs! Eliminating these potential issues makes it easier for you to enjoy a full yoga session without distractions.

3. Say Goodbye to Sunburn
Our skin is the largest organ in our body and spending time outdoors can expose the skin to harmful UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, or even skin cancer. By practicing yoga indoors, it removes the worry altogether and participants can practice their asanas without sunscreen - removing the discomfort of sticky skin after sweating. This is especially important for those with skin conditions which can flare up from extended sun exposure too. Plus, let’s be honest, who can tackle a relaxing downward dog with a sun-burnt back and shoulders? Ouch!

4. Breathe Better!
Air quality, especially lately, has been a huge concern for many individuals who enjoy the outdoors. For those with chronic conditions like asthma, it is even more of a challenge. While outdoor yoga and stretching out in nature is fantastic, it’s best to stay indoors on days when the air quality is poor. Being in a well-ventilated studio provides clean air that is free from pollutants, which can cause health issues and impact your breathing. With yoga, which encircles around breathing exercises, such as ujjayi breath or alternate nostril breathing, being able to breathe well is important. These practices all encourage steady airflow and improve oxygen circulation.

While we love nature and spending time outside, sometimes sessions indoors are the key to a happy workout, especially those who are in sensitive groups. At Roots Yoga and Healing, we are committed to your health and invite you to join us in the studio for a dose of relaxation, clarity and weather-proof wellness this summer!
